When to Do Routine Car Maintenance

All vehicles come with an owner's manual that recommends owners have their cars serviced at routine intervals. Servicing a vehicle helps maintain it, which in turn can keep a car running longer. Even if you can't remember your car's service intervals off the top of your head, good news; usually a routine car maintenance schedule is based off industry averages. Riverside Ford has a rundown of when people usually get their vehicles checked.

3,000 to 7,000 Miles

All fluids and exterior lights should be inspected around this time - including transmission fluid, brake fluid, wiper fluid, and coolant. The one fluid you definitely have to change in this range is engine oil, as well as the oil filter. This ensures everything in your engine will run smoothly.

15,000 to 30,000 Miles

Every 15,000 miles, the air filter should be replaced (sometimes more often if weather conditions are dry and dusty). During this mileage range, a vehicle's battery and charging system should also be inspected. Replace the fuel filter and power steering fluid in the later end of this range, too. At the 30,000-mile mark, have your radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads, and suspension checked.

35,000 to 50,000 Miles

This is probably around the point that the battery needs to be replaced, if it has not been already. Around 40,000 miles, replace the spark plugs and wires. The suspension should also be checked again in this range. Also, it's a good idea to have your ignition system fully inspected before your vehicle's odometer hits 50,000 miles.

60,000 Miles

Radiator hoses and coolant should be replaced here, as well as power steering fluid and your engine's timing belts. If you haven't replaced your brake pads and brake fluid, now's the time to do it. Continue to do all of the above at regular intervals as well.
